About Worldtally
A visited countries map that lives in your link
Worldtally is a free travel tracker for all 195 countries: the 193 UN member states plus Palestine and the Holy See. Tick off the places you have been and the map fills in as you go, with a continent breakdown, first-visit timeline, milestones, city list and shareable infographics.
There is no account and no database. The whole map — countries, years, repeat trips and cities — is encoded into the link. Copy it to keep your map, send it to a friend, or export a JSON backup. Nothing about your map is sent to a server.
- 195countries counted
- 19infographic layouts
- 1link to save or share
- 0accounts to create
How it works
- Tick off where you have been. Click a country on the map or search the list. Micro-states have dots so they are easy to find.
- Add the details that matter. Type a first-visit year, add repeat trips, mark a country as lived in, and tick the cities you know.
- Keep it or share it. Copy the link, export a JSON backup, or open Infographics to download a summary card, poster, stamps or timeline.
There are also dedicated trackers for all 50 US states plus Washington DC and 113 UK counties and county-level areas, each with its own shareable link.
How many countries have I visited?
Your total is the number of countries you tick on the map. Worldtally counts against all 195 countries, so the headline number is your visited-country count and the percentage is that number out of 195. If you have ticked 50 countries, that is 50 of 195, or about 26%.
The continent breakdown below the map shows the same count by region, and the year chart and milestones add context without changing the total.
What counts as visiting a country?
There is no official rule. Some travellers count a country as soon as they set foot in it, even during an airport layover. Others require leaving the airport, staying overnight, or spending at least a day there. Pick a rule you can apply consistently, and use the same rule for every country.
Worldtally does not enforce a definition; it records what you tick. The only fixed part is the country list: 195 sovereign states, not territories. These are the situations that come up most often:
| Situation | A consistent way to handle it |
|---|---|
| Airport layover | Count it only if you leave the terminal — or count the airport itself, but decide before you start. |
| Cruise or ferry port | Count it if you disembark and set foot ashore. |
| Border crossing without stopping | A stamp is not automatically a visit for everyone; count it only if you actually spend time in the country. |
| Overseas territory | Not a separate country in this list; count the sovereign state it belongs to. |
| Living there | Counts as visited; use the lived-in toggle to record residence years separately. |
Why 195 countries, not 249?
Worldtally uses the sovereign-state list: 193 UN member states plus the two non-member observer states, Palestine and the Holy See. That makes 195. Territories and dependencies such as Greenland, Hong Kong, Puerto Rico and French Polynesia are not counted separately; in this list they belong to a sovereign state.
Other trackers count 236 or 249 countries and territories, or include partially recognised states. Those are different standards, not better or worse. What matters is a fixed denominator: on Worldtally, 50 countries is always 50 out of 195, so your percentage means the same thing every time.
| Continent | Countries |
|---|---|
| Africa | 54 |
| Asia | 48 |
| Europe | 44 |
| North America | 23 |
| South America | 12 |
| Oceania | 14 |
| Total | 195 |
The continent grouping follows the UN geoscheme: Cyprus, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Türkiye are in Asia, and Russia is in Europe. The interactive checklist above has the full list.
Years, repeat trips and cities
A visited-country map usually stops at one colour per country. Worldtally keeps the rest of the story: the year you first visited, repeat trips, whether you lived there, and the cities you have ticked. The first-visit year and residence years feed the timeline, passport stamps and world clock; cities feed the places-lived view and cities map, while repeat trips show up in the yearly chart and heatmap.
Add a year in the row next to a country. Open the arrow at the end of the row to add repeat trips, residence years and cities. A country still counts once in the headline total, while repeat trips are counted separately in the year views.
Private by default, easy to share
Your map is encoded into the part of the URL after the #. Browsers do not send that fragment to a server, so there is no account, no database and nothing to log in to. Copy link puts the whole map in the link; Export gives you a JSON backup, and Import restores one. Treat a shared link as public: it contains your countries, years and city names.
There are no ads or cross-site tracking scripts. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, a cookieless aggregate service, to see which pages are used and how the site performs. The app remembers the last map in this browser's local storage so the bare address reopens it; Clear map empties it.
What makes Worldtally different?
Spreadsheets are flexible but not visual; static map images look good but stop at a picture. Account-based trackers can sync, but they require a signup. Worldtally is the middle path: an interactive map with the details behind it, no account, and a link that is the save file.
- More than a coloured map. First visits, repeat trips, residence years and cities all feed the stats.
- Built for sharing. Nineteen infographic layouts, from a one-page summary to passport stamps and a timeline.
- No signup, no ads, no cross-site tracking. The map is in the link; local storage only remembers your last one. Analytics is cookieless and aggregate.
- A fixed 195-country standard. Your percentage has a clear denominator and a consistent list.
- Works in the browser. No app install, and the interface adapts to desktop and mobile.
Frequently asked questions
How many countries have I visited?
Your total is the number of countries you have ticked. Worldtally counts against 195, so 50 ticked countries is 50 of 195, or about 26%.
What counts as visiting a country?
There is no official rule. Many travellers count a country when they set foot in it; others require leaving the airport, staying overnight or spending a day there. Choose a rule and apply it consistently. Worldtally counts what you tick.
Do territories like Puerto Rico or Hong Kong count?
Not separately in Worldtally's 195-country list. They are territories or special regions of a sovereign state. If you count territories, your personal total may be higher than your Worldtally total.
Why 195 countries and not 249?
Worldtally counts 193 UN member states plus the two non-member observer states, Palestine and the Holy See. Some trackers include territories and dependencies, which produces totals like 236 or 249. Both are valid; Worldtally uses a fixed sovereign-state list.
Is Worldtally free?
Yes. There are no ads, accounts or paid tiers. Everything runs in the browser.
Do I need an account to save my map?
No. The whole map is encoded in the link. Copy link keeps it, Export downloads a JSON backup, and your browser also remembers the last map locally. Clear map empties it.
Is my map private?
The map data sits after the # in the URL, which browsers do not send to a server. There is no database and no cross-site tracking. Cloudflare Web Analytics provides aggregate, cookieless usage data. A link you share is public to anyone who has it, and it contains your countries, years and city names.
Can I track repeat trips and cities?
Yes. Add a first-visit year in the country row, then open the arrow to add repeat trips, residence years and cities. Repeat trips appear in the year chart, heatmap and timeline. Residence years and cities feed the places-lived view and cities map, and residence years are also marked on the passport stamps.
Can I download or print my map?
Open Infographics to export a summary card, map poster, passport stamps, timeline, cities map, membership card, scratch map and more as PNGs. Each carries a small worldtally.app credit.
